Desmidea Algae Belt Buckle Sterling Silver, Pink Aventurine & Black Star Sapphire 4 inches by 3 inches Price Upon Request Inspiration: Ernst Haeckel was a biologist, naturalist, philosopher, et al, who had a great and long life from 1834 until his death in 1919. In 1904, Haeckel published Art Forms in Nature, a book of biological lithographs that illustrates organisms small and large from across the Earth. This book has been a huge influence on my jewelry designs, and it was amongst its pages that I found the Desmidea Algae illustration that forms the backbone of this piece. Using a jeweler's saw, I cut out each and every spikey curve of the algae's perimeter, soldered the form onto a larger backplate, and then, using chasing tools, hammered out an organic pattern into the metal. Lastly, 6 stones were bezel set into the center of the buckle. I like to think it looks like the face of an otherworldly spider. This is the first belt buckle that I have created, and I enjoyed making it so much I hope to create many more.
