Inspiration:

This bracelet was made immediately before moving to New York. I knew little of where I was going, only that it was a small cottage on a river about an hour north of Manhattan. Little did I know then how it would turn out to live in Ossining, a beautiful but very isolated community a good hour north of the city.

This bracelet was born of the excitement of moving to a new place and the loss of leaving one behind. The obsidian in the center represents the city, and the river of sterling silver wire represents the Hudson and Croton rivers, leading to and around the city.

Technique:

Starting with a single sheet of silver, wire was laid out on the sheet and soldered using a process called overlay. Then the pieces were sawed apart and reattached using barrel hinges. The center piece of silver was torch textured with a small torch, heating the metal to just below melting point, creating bubbles and random textures throughout. The stone was set using prongs that were filed to become super sharp.  A simple clasp keeps the bracelet together comfortably, while allowing the pieces to move slightly.
